Interview de Roukika l’artiste porte-parole pour la promotion des droits de l’enfant

Quelles étaient vos premières  impressions suite à votre nomination en tant que artiste porte-parole des droits de l’enfant pour l’UNICEF TCHAD ? Que représente pour vous ce titre ?

Ma première impression est qu’une grande mission m’est confiée. Celle d’apporter ma pierre et une touche particulière aux actions de sensibilisation et de conscientisation relative aux droits des enfants. Ce titre m’engage à porter haut et sans relâche la voix des enfants.

Quelles sont les raisons qui vous ont motivé à participer  au festival et particulièrement pour le ‘’Prix Spécial UNICEF’’ ?

En général, ma participation au Festival N’DjamVi est motivée par la volonté d’exprimer mon art et mon engagement. Cette fois-ci,  pour le ‘’Prix Spécial UNICEF ‘’, la pertinence du thème relatif aux droits des enfants m’a particulièrement motivée. En fait, j’ai vécu une enfance difficile dans une famille de 10 enfants. Cela n’a pas été  facile pour notre famille de joindre les deux bouts avec un père parti très tôt et une mère ménagère. Nous avons dû  affronter vents et marées  pour grandir. Voir les autres enfants revivre ce que j’ai vécu sans orientation me fait verser des larmes, et j’aimerais agir en faveur de ces enfants d’une manière ou d’une autre.

Comment voyez-vous votre engagement à travers votre positon d’artiste ?

Mon engagement en tant qu’artiste est d’utiliser le média qu’est la musique pour promouvoir  et faire respecter les droits des enfants partout dans le pays.

Vous êtes élu pour un mandat d’une année, quelles actions souhaitez-vous mener pour promouvoir les droits de l’enfant au Tchad ?

Je souhaite réaliser diverses activités visant à promouvoir la participation et l’expression des jeunes, des concerts de bienfaisance et faire des séries des tournées de sensibilisation et d’information accompagnée de débats et d’échanges sur le respect des droits des enfants par rapport aux problématiques propres aux différentes régions  (enfants bouviers, excisions, travail dans les mines d’or, enfants réfugiés et déplacés, mariage précoce).

Quel objectif aimeriez-vous atteindre à la fin de votre mandat ?

J’espère pouvoir à la fin de mon mandat transmettre des messages,  connaissances et des informations sur les droits de l’enfant et faire prendre conscience à toutes les personnes l’importance de les respecter.

Young Chadians express their views on violence

A video workshop gives children and youth in Chad an opportunity to share their experiences and their vision.

N´DJAMENA, Chad, 24 November 2014 – “Lights! Camera! Action! » a confident voice echoes in the backyard of a house in Chad´s capital, N´Djamena. With tousled hair, ripped clothes and makeup to give the appearance of being bruised, 15-year-old Benedicte Dandé is the director, writer and main actress of a 60-second video entitled My reflection.

Benedicte is one of 15 children from different youth associations who have taken part in a OneMinutesJr. video workshop organized by UNICEF Chad. Over the course of six days, children and youth between age 11 and 18 have learned how to handle a camera, write a script and express their views on violence against children.

Despite her good humor, Benedicte has had a hard life. She lost her father right after birth, and years later lost her mother. She admits having lived through very difficult times until her mother’s second marriage, to a man she refers to as her “guardian angel”.

“I met this man who gave me shelter in his centre,” she says. “This man became a father to me.”

The man is pastor Bolngar Domtinet, director of the Foundation of Love for the Education of Children in Need (FAFED, in French). Supported by UNICEF, the centre was established in 1994 with a mission to promote and protect the rights of children and to give them a supportive setting for their well-being and education.

“The centre helps children who are victims of discrimination and abuse. Benedict grew up in the centre. She is a studious girl with a strong character. I’m really proud of her,” Pastor Domtinet says.

Drawing on life experience

Courageous and confident, Benedicte made use of some of her life experiences during the video workshop, writing and directing a well-crafted short film advocating for children´s rights. Thanks to the workshop, she was able to express her views about the violence some girls are exposed to in Chad, particularly orphans.

“I said to myself that it is easier to write a story that one has experienced personally. So I was inspired to write the script loosely based on my own story,” she says. “In my video, Khadijah, a 12-year-old orphan, has been mistreated and is being taken to FAFED.”

“The main two characters in the video are young girls – orphans. One is already living in the centre, and the other one has been brought after being abused,” she continues. “The film connects the life of both girls. The one living in the centre sees her reflection in the newly arrived. They are connected by pain, and that connection makes them as if they were the same person.”

Other films made by the participants have touched on different forms of violence, such as violence against children living with disabilities, violence suffered by refugee and returnee children from the Central African Republic, and child marriage.
Chad has the third-highest rate of child marriage in the world. It is estimated that three out of 10 girls are married before age 15. Female genital mutilation is also a common practice, affecting 2 out of 5 women, according to the 2010 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey.

“Through the OneMinutesJunior, UNICEF´s goal is to encourage the expression and participation of children and young people, with special focus on adolescent girls,” said Bruno Maes, UNICEF Representative in Chad, during the closing ceremony of the workshop. “This platform creates the opportunity for them to make their voices heard by a wide and diverse audience, offer them a space of exchange, encounter and learning.”

TheOneMinutesJr. was established in 2002 by the European Cultural Foundation, The One Minutes Foundation and UNICEF to develop new tools to empower young people and promote social change. Chad is participating for the first time, and the videos made will participate in the CRC@25 video challenge.

Children dance for peace in Chad

UPDATE: On the occasion of International Children’s Day, the European Union Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) organized a Google Hangout on Air, to highlight and discuss the “EU Children of Peace” projects to which UNICEF has been contributing for the past three years (Cameroon, Chad, Pakistan and Turkey). The Google Hangout, a live broadcast social media chat, connected nine ECHO partners from around the world who are implementing the EU Children of Peace project. N’DJAMENA, Chad, 3 October 2014 – Last summer, I traveled with a UNICEF production team to Tédjou, a small town in eastern Chad with a mix of arid and green landscapes, in the region of Dar Sila.

Our objective was to talk with a group of parents in Tédjou about the Dance4Peace project, and to seek permission for their children to participate.

Initiated by the European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO), as part of the EU Children of Peace initiative, the project invited children from conflict-affected countries around the world to take part in an original music video. The intention of the project was to draw attention to children as the most innocent – and often most affected – victims of conflict, and to allow children to share messages of peace.

In the case of the children of Tédjou, inter-communal clashes in the neighbouring region of Darfur in Sudan forced them to flee with their families in 2013. The town is home to some 50,000 Chadian returnees and Sudanese refugees.

An estimated 9,000 children here had to suspend their studies. Now they have the opportunity to return to school, thanks to the EU Children of Peace initiative, implemented by UNICEF with the support of ECHO, which provides conflict-affected children access to basic education and child-friendly spaces.

Messages of peace

After presenting our project to the chief of the village, we were greeted by a group of teachers at the school centre, which was empty for the school holidays. We explained the how we would teach the Dance4Peace song and choreography to the children and how the filming would take place.

The Chief, Abdullah Hassan Ali, welcomed the idea, saying that it would allow the children of Tédjou to send messages of peace and love to other children of the world.
“This dance project for peace will let our town be known and our history experienced, as currently there are other parts of the world also experiencing war like we did,” he said. “That’s why we allow and encourage our children to participate actively, even though we are in a period of Ramadan.”

In the Chief´s courtyard, we met the students chosen for learning the Dance4Peace song and choreography. They were between 11 and 17 years old, girls and boys in equal number. It was their first time learning choreography, apart from the cultural dances of their land.

Learning together

It was there where I met little Mouna Abdoulaye Arbab, a 12-year-old girl who attends second-year elementary school. Her teacher considered her one of the most timid girls in her class, as she did not speak much or participate in games with her classmates.

But the little girl in front of my eyes was far from timid. During the choreography, she was the one practicing harder, expressing herself openly, always facing the camera.

“I was encouraged by my mother to attend the Dance4Peace,” she said, smiling. “I’ve never danced this kind of music, but I like it. In the video you show us, I saw kids my age dancing, and it was beautiful.”

Mouna was among the first to rehearse the choreography for Dance for Peace during the filming. “I am very happy to dance with other girls of the village who are older than me. In the village, we rarely dance together girls and boys, but with Dance4Peace, for three days, we were all together and learning the same thing.”

The day after the shooting, we visited Mouna’s family. She lives in a hut made of mud and wooden sticks. When asked how she organizes her day, she replied without hesitation: “Since I’m on vacation, I wash the dishes and I take care of my two younger brothers while Mom is in the field. Soon, I will leave to return to school. I think that I’ll be a nurse to care for my parents when they are sick.”
